How a Fence Project Works

We'll come look at your property, discuss what you need, walk the fence line, and talk through material options and cost. We'll also verify that you have a clear survey or that you and your neighbor agree on the line. Before any digging starts, Tennessee law requires a utility locate through 811, and we handle that.

Step 2: The work. Whether we're installing new fence, repairing storm damage, replacing rotted posts, or hanging a gate, the same crew does the job. We set posts in concrete or tamp them depending on the application and soil conditions. We measure post spacing carefully, rack or step the fence where the ground slopes, and install cap and trim to protect the wood or vinyl. For chain link, we tension the mesh properly and install stretcher bars and tension bands to keep it tight and square. For gates, we hang them plumb, check that they swing freely, and install self-closing and self-latching hardware where you want it.

Do I need a permit to install a fence in Memphis?

Permit rules vary across Memphis and the surrounding county. What's the difference between setting fence posts in concrete and tamping them?

Posts set in concrete are bedded in a concrete footer below the frost line, which anchors them against heave and movement. Tamped posts are set in the ground and compacted with earth or gravel, which works well for many applications but relies on good soil contact and regular maintenance. We choose the method based on your fence type, the soil, and what the job requires. For a privacy fence or gate that bears load, concrete is the standard. For farm or ranch fencing, tamping often works fine. We'll recommend what's right for your situation.

I have a pool. What fencing do I need?

Pool fencing must meet local pool barrier codes set by state law and local ordinance. Pool fence is installed to meet those codes, and the final determination of compliance rests with the authority having jurisdiction, which is usually your city or county building department. We install pool fence properly, but you should verify the specific height, material, and gate requirements with your local building official before we start. A pool fence is a barrier, not a substitute for supervision.

My neighbor's fence is leaning toward my property. What do I do?

A leaning fence is often a sign of rotted posts, loose concrete footers, or posts that have shifted. If it's your neighbor's fence, the repair is their responsibility. If it's on your property line and you both want it fixed, you can share the cost or one of you can pay for the repair.
